What a newsroom taught me about designing to a deadline
Years of weekly print deadlines leave you with habits: decide early, design systems instead of pages, and know which details readers actually notice.

A weekly magazine doesn’t wait for inspiration. The pages go to the printer on Thursday night, whether the cover story is ready or not.
Decide early
The most expensive decisions are the late ones. Agree on the grid, the type and the colour rules before the first page is laid out — then spend the week on content, not on style.
Design systems, not pages
A good template is a promise to your future self. When the system is right, the last page of the issue looks as considered as the first.
Know what readers notice
Readers notice rhythm, clarity and good pictures. They rarely notice the details designers argue about at midnight. Spend your time accordingly.
