Nord Quarterly

Redesigning an independent culture magazine for a new generation of readers — without losing the voice its subscribers love.

Nord Quarterly

( 01 — Challenge )

Where it started

After a decade in print, the magazine’s layout had grown inconsistent and hard for a small team to produce on deadline. Newsstand presence was weak, and younger readers saw it as dated.

The brief: a modern, flexible system that keeps the magazine’s character, works for long essays and photo stories, and can be produced in-house every quarter.

What we built

We built a 12-column grid with three page rhythms — dense news, long reads and visual stories — and paired a sharp grotesk for headlines with a readable serif for text. A modular cover system lets the editors swap image, headline and colour each issue while the masthead stays recognisable on the shelf.

What changed

The team now lays out each issue from the templates, in less time and with fewer late changes. The redesign launched with the autumn issue.
